流感病毒的外層有兩種不同糖蛋白構成輻射狀突起，即血凝素（H）和神經氨酸酶（N）。流感病毒的抗原變異就是指H和N抗原結構的改變。乙型流感病毒的抗原變異很慢。如果H和N都發生了大的變異，便產生了新的亞型（質變），如1957年H2N2（甲2亞型）、1968年以后的H3N2（甲3亞型）。乙型流感病毒間同樣有變異，但未劃分成亞型轉變。
中國流行的有甲3和甲1兩個亞型毒株，乙型病毒中同時存在有兩個系抗原性和基因特性明顯不同的毒株。
乙型流感呈暴發或小流行，不引起世界性流感大流行。至今還未找到它存在于人之外的其他動物中的證據。
由于今年甲型H1N1流感病毒已經轉化為季節性流感，所以今年新推出的流感疫苗是“混合型”的，既能防季節性流感，也能防甲型H1N1流感。也就是說打一針，就能對今年流行的三種毒株產生抗體。
重點接種人群是：5歲及以下兒童尤其是2歲及以下的嬰幼兒；60歲及以上老年人；哮喘、慢阻肺、糖尿病、高血壓等慢性病患者等；養老院和其他慢性病康復機構的工作人員、流感高危人員的家庭成員及照看、護理他們的人員；醫療衛生保健人員。
禁忌接種者為：對雞蛋和任何一種疫苗成分過敏的人群、中度或重度急性發熱的病人、曾患格林巴利綜合征者。
