事情的緣起是《新英格蘭醫學雜志》的一篇報道：美國賓夕法尼亞州一名57歲的婦女因為打死了一只蚊子，造成肌肉受到小孢子蟲屬真菌感染而死亡。研究人員推測，這名婦女是把蚊子拍死在了皮膚上，被打爛的蚊子尸體殘骸進入皮膚，造成感染。由于《新英格蘭醫學雜志》是世界上連續出版時間zui久的醫學期刊，此事引起了更多網友的關注。
