Calcofluor white dye is a fluorescent blue dye that can bind to cellulose and chitin, which are present in the cell walls of fungi, algae, and plants. In budding yeast, the Calcofluor white stain stains the bud scars more strongly because they contain higher concentrations of chitin. Calcofluor white staining is sometimes used to identify fungal infections in medical samples.
